Oryx and Crake Reading

For this coming Tuesday March 3 I'd like you to have read through page 144 (up to the chapter called "Sveltana") of Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, along with the Abrams assignments on the syllabus: "novel" and "metaphor."  Have a great weekend, and hope you enjoy Atwood's freaky, post-apocalyptic science fiction!

Dry Lips is a contemporary play by Cree playwright Tomson Highway and a big change of pace from A Midsummer Night's DContinue

I was also very frustrated by the cliffhanger the first time I read Oryx and Crake. I asked everyone I knew who had read it what they thought happened, and I went back and re-read to see if Atwood had planted any big clues that might lead me to the…

You've all brought very good insights to this question. That Jimmy's intelligence is really just of a different kind than Crake's seems clear. How brilliant of a word-man he really is we don't know because he sells himself short so consistently, and…

Neat! You can actually click on Oryx's iris (like how Crake used that as his secret button to get into his grandmaster chatroom razzmatazz thing.)

This link http://www.oryxandcrake.co.uk is to the official site for the novel, and it's pretty cool. I'll also copy it to the blog section of our site, but I'm posting it here because the essay by Margaret Atwood here seems pretty germane to your qu…

Develop an argument with a clear, interesting guiding thesis, focused paragraphs, graceful transitions, and lots of concrete support from close-reading of the texts, on one of the following four topics. Your essay should be four to six pages long, typed in a 12-point font, double-spaced, and with reasonable margins. Essays are due by 5 pm on Friday March 20. Please hand in your essay by email. Dry Lips Interviews Link

Here's an excellent link Ashley Fu posted below to an interview with Tomson Highway on writing Dry Lips, as well as some other background on the play and interviews with actors and the dramaturg. Just in case anyone missed it below, I wanted to feature it in a separate blog post. http://www.playwrights.ca/portfolios/drylips.html

Louise Erdrich Bios and background info

Hi folks. I really liked this link with info on Louise Erdrich, who wrote the short story "Lulu's Boys" that we're reading for today. Erdrich is part Ojibway, a tribe whose language, along with Cree, is spoken in Dry Lips. Some of the themes and concerns in her writing are also similar to Highway's. I found the interviews here especially interesting, as well as the information on the Indian boarding school system in the U.S., similar in many ways to the Canadian residential schools we dis… Continue
